Celebrating Pohela Boishakh in Canterbury‑Bankstown

Celebrating Pohela Boishakh in Canterbury‑Bankstown

As the sun rises on Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, we extend our warmest wishes to the Bengali community and all residents of Canterbury‑Bankstown celebrating this important cultural tradition.

Pohela Boishakh is a time of renewal, hope and togetherness. Marked by music, colour, food and community gatherings, it reflects the enduring spirit of Bengali culture – one that celebrates resilience, creativity and the joy of new beginnings.

Canterbury‑Bankstown is proud to be home to a vibrant and growing Bengali community whose contributions enrich the social, cultural and economic life of our local area. From family‑run businesses and community organisations to festivals, language, arts and cuisine, Bengali culture continues to play a valued role in shaping the diverse identity of our region. This New Year is also an opportunity to come together as neighbours – across generations and cultures – to celebrate the shared values that unite us: respect, kindness, community and a desire for a prosperous and inclusive future.

As families and friends gather to welcome the New Year, we acknowledge the deep cultural significance of this occasion and the sense of belonging it fosters within our local community. May this year bring good health, harmony and success to all, and may the spirit of Pohela Boishakh inspire fresh beginnings and new opportunities across Canterbury‑Bankstown.
