No Place for Hatred in Australia After Bondi Hanukkah Attack
Independent Multicultural Media Australia calls for cohesion, safety and respect following one of the darkest days in the nation's history
Independent Multicultural Media Australia (IMMA) stands shoulder-to-shoulder with our Jewish media members, and with Jewish communities across Australia. We extend our deepest condolences to the families grieving this senseless act of terror.
The horrific scenes that unfolded across our televisions and mobile screens last evening have shaken our members and all of Australia to its core. The murder of 15 people at Bondi Beach, carried out on the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, is an overwhelming national tragedy that has plunged our nation into mourning.
We also recognise the great efforts of the police, the emergency services, and first responders. We recognise the bravery of community members who acted with great courage yesterday. We also extend our support to fellow media workers who are covering this tragedy, and are committed to reporting with accuracy, sensitivity, and responsibility.
Australia's multicultural society is built on mutual respect, safety, and shared civic values. IMMA unambiguously condemns all forms of violence, hatred, and vilification. We are deeply alarmed by the rise of antisemitism in recent years and reject it in the strongest possible terms. There is no place for such hatred in our media, our public life, our institutions, or our nation.
